WBJEE
West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination
About this exam — pattern, marking, syllabus and where it leadsShowHide
WBJEE is West Bengal's own engineering and pharmacy entrance test, and the route to Jadavpur University and the state's government engineering colleges. Its marking is the most unusual on this list: three question categories, two of which carry negative marking and one of which awards proportional partial credit. Knowing which category you are in changes whether a half-certain answer is worth attempting.
- Duration
- Two papers on the same day, 2 hours each.
- Papers
- Paper I — Mathematics. Paper II — Physics and Chemistry together.
- Mode
- Pen-and-paper, OMR sheet. Responses cannot be edited once marked.
Question formats
- Category 1 — Single correct option30 of the 40 physics questions.
- Category 2 — Single correct option, weighted higher5 physics questions.
- Category 3 — One or more correct options5 physics questions, and the only category with partial credit.
Marking
| Question type | Correct | Partial | Incorrect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Category 1 | +1 | — | −¼ |
| Category 2 | +2 | — | −½ |
| Category 3 (one or more correct) | +2 for every correct option and no incorrect one | 2 × (correct options marked ÷ total correct options), when no incorrect option is marked | No negative marking |

Eligibility and admissions
These change from year to year. Always confirm against the current information brochure before acting on anything here.
- Conducted by:
- The West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations Board (WBJEEB).
- Physics weight:
- 40 questions, 50 marks, inside the 155-question, 200-mark paper.
- Eligibility:
- Class 12 with Physics and Mathematics, plus Chemistry or an approved alternative; a minimum in English. West Bengal domicile is needed for the reserved and government-aided seats.
- Ranks:
- Sit both papers for the General Merit Rank. Paper II alone gives only the Pharmacy Merit Rank; Paper I alone gives no rank at all.
Where this exam leads
Universities
Jadavpur is the one that draws candidates from outside the state.
Jadavpur University · University of Calcutta · MAKAUT · Aliah University · University of Kalyani · Kazi Nazrul University
Government engineering colleges
Kalyani Government Engineering College · Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College · GCELT Kolkata · Cooch Behar Government Engineering College · GCETT Berhampore and Serampore
Private colleges in the counselling
Heritage Institute of Technology · Techno Main Salt Lake · RCC Institute of Information Technology · Haldia Institute of Technology · IEM / UEM · MCKV Institute of Engineering · JIS group · Adamas University
Grouped by band rather than ranked one by one, because the ordering changes yearly and a branch at one institute is often worth more than a seat at a higher-ranked one. Check NIRF and the official counselling data before setting your preferences.
We do not publish closing ranks for this exam. Its counselling data is not released in a form we can verify institute by institute, and a plausible-looking invented number is worse than none — take the cut-offs from the conducting body's own counselling reports.
Courses offered
- • B.Tech / B.E. — Computer Science and its variants, which take the highest cut-offs almost everywhere
- • B.Tech / B.E. — Electronics, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Chemical
- • Interdisciplinary programmes: Data Science, AI, Mathematics and Computing, Engineering Physics
- • Dual-degree and five-year integrated B.Tech–M.Tech programmes at several institutes
- • B.Tech in Marine, Mining, Agricultural and Dairy Technology at particular colleges
- • B.Pharm and Pharm.D — about thirty-seven pharmacy colleges take part
- • B.Arch, which additionally requires NATA or JEE Main Paper 2A
